UR Cardiologist Says Study Showing Calcium and Heart Disease Link Needs More Research

A study published recently in the British Medical Journal suggests women who have a diet high in calcium and who also take a daily calcium supplement of more than 1,400 milligrams are at higher risk of death from heart disease.  The Swedish study analyzed data from more than 61,000 women over a 19-year period.

New Pocket-Sized Ultrasound is Changing the Way Physicians "See" Their Patients

Cardiologists at Highland Hospital are now using portable devices to take ultrasound images of the heart.

Warm Spell Very Short Lived

Temperatures soared into the 60s today, shattering the previous high temperature for this date set in 1974 when the high reached 55 degrees.
Shortly after three this morning, the mercury reached 56 degrees, and twelve hours later the temperature reached 64.
The normal high for this time of year is 32.
The normal low is 17.
It'll be back to reality by Thursday afternoon, temperatures are expected to only be in the 20s, with snow and blowing snow by Thursday night.

Local Colleges Take Steps to Prevent Flu Outbreak

Students are returning to Rochester-area college campuses following winter break, and officials say they're taking steps to prevent an outbreak of the flu.  At SUNY Geneseo, Dr. Steven Radi, Medical Director of the Health and Counseling Center, says flu shots are being offered for students. Communication has also gone out reminding students to take preventive measures such as hand-washing, covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing, using hand sanitizer dispensers located around campus, and getting plenty of sleep and good nutrition.
