Local Students on Food Network Program

You might see three students from the Fairport BOCES on TV Monday night.

The Food Network program called "Restaurant: Impossible" filmed an episode in September at Papa C's Eastside Cafe in Fairport.

The show invited BOCES instructor Rina Harris to help out - and she brought along senior students CJ Artinian, Colin O'Malley and Ashley Driscoll.

You might see them cleaning and cooking as they help the restaurant with its new menu.

Education Alignment Summit in Rochester

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren delivered the keynote address at today's National League of Cities' Early Education Alignment Summit.

Rochester is one of six cities in the country selected by the National League of Cities to take part in a technical assistance project aimed at aligning early childhood learning and K through 12 systems.

Getting Rochester Families to Read

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren Wednesday launched the Rochester Families Read program, which encourages parents to read to their children.

As part of the effort, some two thousand Curious George books will be handed out to kids on Halloween at four city recreation centers: The Thomas P. Ryan, David F. Gantt and Flint Street Community Centers and the Campbell Street R-Center.

Parents will also be encouraged to join a Facebook group where they can find Curious-George themed events and interact other parents.

SUNY to Join Study Abroad Initiative

  UNDATED (AP) _ New York State's public university system is embracing a new initiative to send more students abroad. 

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher is expected to announce a partnership Wednesday with the Institute of International Education in support of a 25 percent increase in study abroad by 2020. 

SUNY says it's the first comprehensive university system in the nation to join the institute's Generation Study Abroad initiative, which aims to double the number of U.S. college students who study overseas.

Taking Stock Of An Extended School Day Program In Rochester

Officials from the Rochester City School District and an organization which works on helping schools extend their instructional day say they are pleased with what they've seen in Rochester since a new program began a couple of years ago.

District Superintendent  Bolgen Vargas says the district has seen an improvement in test scores in four out of the five elementary schools where the program began.

“We saw some great results in the area of reading and language development, which is an area that the district is struggling with."

Power Issues Results In Changes For Some RCSD Programs Tuesday

Officials with the Rochester City School District say that work being done by RG&E to a transformer has shut off power Tuesday to district facilities and a charter school  at 40 Hart Street.

Three student programs are affected.  That includes adult education classes which are canceled Tuesday;  Young Mothers and Interim Health Academy will have classes at 175 Martin Street. 

and the Rochester Career Mentoring Charter School is canceling classes Tuesday.
