WXXI has won four Telly awards – three bronze awards for its national health care series, Second Opinion, and a fourth bronze for its documentary Music for Life: The Story of New Horizons. The Telly Awards Competition recognizes distinction in local, regional, and cable TV programs and commercials, as well as video and film productions.
Second Opinion is the only regularly scheduled health series on public television. Each week, Dr. Peter Salgo engages a panel of medical professionals and patients in honest, in-depth discussions about life-changing medical decisions.
The award winning episodes were “Childhood Cancer,” “Addiction to Pain Medications,” and “PTSD.” Second Opinion is produced in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions.
The series is made possible with support from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). It airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m., and Sundays at 12:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV, Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on WXXI-WORLD (DT21.2), and on more than 250 PBS stations across the country. Music for Life: The Story of New Horizons shares the heartwarming stories of a group of seniors who rekindled, or found for the first time, their passion for music and performing through the formation of the New Horizons band. WXXI was also credited for two additional Telly awards garnered by the City of Rochester. The two award-winning videos were produced by the City’s Bureau of Communications in partnership with WXXI. “Keep the Clean Streak Going,” which documented the 2014 Clean Sweep project, was awarded at the bronze level in the Online Video - Government Relations category. "City of the Arts: Ward Stare, Music Director, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra", which shared the music director’s journey to classical music, was awarded the bronze level in the Film/Video – Cultural category.
These productions are part of the City 12, a television station dedicated to providing City residents with information vital to daily living, which is programmed and managed by WXXI. City 12 is the nation’s first collaboration between local government and a public broadcasting station.
