Windstream Planning Some Layoffs

Windstream, the telecommunications company which has a substantial presence in Rochester, has announced it will be cutting a couple of dozen jobs in Rochester.

Altogether Windstream is planning to eliminate about 400 jobs around the country, with about 175 of those being cut through employee buyouts.  23 jobs will be cut in Rochester. There's no word how many of those might involve voluntary buyouts.

President and CEO Jeff Gardner says the changes are not easy, but are necessary for Windstream to succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. He says the company continues to invest in growth areas, mainly business services and consumer broadband.

Windstream has a total workforce of more than 13,000 workers.  It employs nearly 675 in the Rochester area.
