West Irondequoit Central School District Superintendent Responds to Budget Rejection by Voters

The district did not get the 60 percent super majority of votes needed to pass. This is the second vote on the same budget. The spending plan was rejected for the first time on May 20th.

According to Superintendent Jeff Crane, the proposed budgetary increase came from a deficit created by cuts in state school funding. Crane says Irondequoit property owners cannot afford to pay for funding originally taken on by the state, and it may point to a need to change the funding structure for schools in New York State.

"Before there is reform to the structure the legislature and the governor have to try to find a way to return and restore the monies that have been taken away since 2008 from our state-aid," said Crane.

The superintendent says he is still working on the details of a contingency budget, but it may require up to 18 staff lay-offs, larger class sizes, and a reduction in programs.
