Wegmans on Mt. Read in Greece closing at night for active shooter drill

The Wegmans store at 3701 Mt. Read Boulevard and the parking lot will be closed  to the public as of 11pm on Tuesday and will re-open 6:30 Wednesday morning, while authorities conduct an active shooter exercise.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Greece Police, Monroe County Emergency Communications Dept., and AMR ambulance will all be involved in the drill.

Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn  says that according to the FBI, over 40% of active shooter incidents in the U.S. between 2000 and 2015 occurred in areas of commerce.

He says the exercise is needed to provide first responders with this kind of training "so that they can confidently respond to an active shooter situation."
