Wayne County To Spray To Try And Control Mosquito-Borne Virus

Officials in Wayne County say they are getting ready to have some aerial spraying done to try and control the spread of  a mosquito-borne virus .

Health officials announced the spraying of the pesticide in parts of Wayne County next week after three horses located on the same farm in the Town of Rose tested positive for the virus called Eastern Equine Encephalitis also known as ‘Triple-E.”

Aerial spraying will be done either next Wednesday or Thursday, September 24 or 25.  The area to be sprayed includes an area bordered by Route 104 to the North, Wayne Center Rose Road to the south, Covell Road on the East and Pilgrimport Road to the west.

Residents will be notified in the targeted area at least 24 hours prior to the spraying. When that spraying happens, residents in the affected area should stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed for one hour after the spraying.

Horse owners in Wayne County are being advised to have their horses vaccinated for the triple-E and West Nile Virus. There is no human vaccine for the Triple-E virus, and officials say the best way to protect yourself is to keep mosquitoes from biting you.

More information is available at the Wayne County Public Health website.
