Voter Registration Up as New York Presidential Primary Approaches

monroecounty.gov

Local elections officials say they're definitely seeing an uptick in voter registrations in advance of New York's presidential primary April 19th, but the deadline to register is coming up.

Monroe County Democratic elections commissioner Tom Ferrarese says through February they were seeing maybe 500 or 600 first-time registrations a week.

"Now that we're into March, we're seeing a thousand a week, and probably this week, which is the last week -- the deadline is on Friday, to either postmark or come in person on the 25th -- probably this week we'll see that number maybe half again or double."

Republican elections commissioner David Van Varick says people can still download registration forms online, but have to submit them by March 25th.

"You cannot complete a registration online, you can get the form then it has to be delivered to the board of elections or mailed."

The online registration system is operated by the DMV.

Mail-in registration forms must be post-marked by this Friday.

But the deadline to change parties to vote in the primary has already expired.

Both local elections commissioners say that there’s always a surge in voter registrations during a presidential year.
