Two of the largest universities in this area have set tuition and other rates for the 2015-16 school year, and there will be some increases.
The University of Rochester says that tuition for undergraduates will rise 2.8 percent to $47,450 in the new academic year. Room and board will be $14,294, a 4.8 percent increase.
U of R President Joel Seligman says that the university is "exercising considerable discipline in our budget and tuition setting processes, sensitive to how any increase in cost of attendance can affect students and families."
Seligman says this year's increases are the lowest in at least 40 years and among the lowest of the peer research institutions that have announced their costs for the upcoming year. He says for the upcoming year, the U of R has increased its commitment to student financial aid by 5.9 percent.
At the Eastman School of Music, tuition will be $47,770, which is a 3.5 percent increase.
At RIT, university officials have announced a 3.8 percent increase in tuition, to $36,596. Room & Board totals around $11,918. Senior Vice President and Treasurer James Waters says that much of the increase will be used to increase access to student aid.
He says that their peer group's average tuition and fees are 13 percent higher than RIT's current rates.
