University Of Rochester Launches Anti-Racism Campaign

The University of Rochester is launching an anti-racism campaign on Saturday, called “We’re Better than THAT.”

The campaign comes after recent racial tensions were brought  up by students at the River Campus, and the U of R formed a committee on diversity.

Beth Olivares is Dean for Diversity Initiatives and a co-chair of the university’s anti-racism working group.

She says the phrase “We’re Better Than THAT,” relates to Meliora, which is the university’s motto of “ever better.”

Olivares says that “racism and hate speech have absolutely no place here at the University of Rochester,” and she tells WXXI News that the goal of this campaign is to put the power of defining the community in the hands of the members of the community.

The anti-racism campaign will be launched at Saturday’s basketball doubleheader s the Rochester men’s team takes on Emory at noon, with the women’s game at 2pm.

Randy Gorbman is WXXI's director of news and public affairs. Randy manages the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
