"Try The Pollock" Says Wegmans VP

A Wegmans vice-president is calling on other supermarkets to change the way they buy seafood.

Carl Salamone is a Wegmans VP of Seafood. He's been buying for the company for 41 years.

Salamone spoke to industry leaders in Chicago last week. In the old days, it seemed like the supply was unlimited - and it was hard convincing people to buy it.

These days, he says supplies of wild seafood continue to shrink and 90% of the seafood sold in the U.S. is imported.

Grocery trade publication Supermarket Newsquoted Salamone recommending that retailers try to get you to buy more pollock and mackerel.

Additionally, Salamone told his peers he expects more land-based aquaculture systems will come over the next few years to help with supply.

For now, he'd like you to consider pollock or mackerel the next time you shop the fish market.
