Rescue crews were called to the scene Monday afternoon of an accident where a tractor trailer has flipped onto its side on the expressway in the town of Gates.
Around 12:45 p.m., the driver was heading eastbound on I-490, exiting 390 North when he lost control of the vehicle. The cab then went over a guardrail, tipping on its side with the cab going over the guardrail.
At around 2:30p.m., rescue crews were able to lower the driver to the ground with a rope harness.
Emergency crews transported the driver to a nearby hospital, and authorities said he suffered some injuries but is expected to be OK. The driver suffered broken ribs and a shoulder injury. He was ticketed for unreasonable speed and moving unsafely from the lane.
"If that tractor section and/or that trailer section been forward more, we would have had a catastrophic event," Gates Fire Chief Jim Harrington told Time Warner Cable News.
The overpass where the accident occurred remained closed for several hours.
DOT inspectors will investigate if there is structural damage to the flyover before reopening.
