The next time your telephone rings, it could be an opportunity for you to help those in need.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester will raise money for local and international social and humanitarian programming during its annual Super Sunday phone-a-thon.

The event is part of a larger fundraising effort, the United Jewish Agency Federation Campaign, which began in September and runs through June.

"We get about 150 or more volunteers to help us raise funds for the campaign and it's meaningful for them and it's extremely meaningful to us to have their interest and their support," said Federation spokesperson Margot Cohen.

Volunteers will call nearly three thousand homes in Monroe County.

"Super Sunday is a very special part of our annual UJA Federation Campaign. It's a day on which we reach out to the largest number of members of the Jewish community to ask for their support," said Cohen.

Cohen notes the group is marking a milestone anniversary.

"The federation, for 75 years, has really been at the heart of the Rochester Jewish community. We work in concert with area synagogues and organizations and agencies and really act as kind of an umbrella for the community - a Jewish United Way - to try to garner support for the needs of the greater Rochester community."

Last year the campaign raised nearly four and a half million dollars.
