Senator Charles Schumer will be in Canandaigua Wednesday to urge federal agencies to work with officials at Sonnenberg Gardens to help them acquire federally owned property adjacent to the museum grounds.
He says Sonnenberg currently lacks from key features, including a welcome center, and a climate-controlled space to archive and display artifacts as well as adequate paved parking.
Schumer says Sonnenberg is looking to expand in order to build these amenities and needs to acquire three and a half acres of land next to the museum.
There are several buildings on that land owned by the U.S. Defense Department and the Army Reserve. The senator says the Army Reserve plans to vacate the facility as of next January, which makes it a good acquisition opportunity for Sonnenberg.
Schumer says the expansion at Sonnenberg would greatly enhance tourism opportunities for that area.
