Shortsville sauerkraut company to close

An Ontario County plant that processes cabbage and sauerkraut says it will be closing that facility later this year, impacting 48 people.

GLK Foods, formerly called the Great Lakes Sauerkraut company, has been at that location in Shortsville for a number of years.

GLK president Ryan Downs says they will be consolidating that facility with a plant that they have in Bear Creek, Wisconsin, because of the expansion going on there. Downs says the decision does not “reflect the valued commitment and talent of the Shortsville staff.”

GLK will keep some employees on through the year as production will continue through mid-September, and shipping and receiving continues throughout 2018.

Some positions in Wisconsin will be offered to a small number of Shortsville workers.

The executive director for Ontario County Economic Development Mike Manikowski says officials are concerned not only for the employees, but also for area farmers who grow cabbage and have used GLK for processing. He says the county will look into whether there are other area food producers that can work with the local farmers.
