A section of Union St. in Rochester opens to 2-way traffic for the first time

City of Rochester, NY

There was some history made in Rochester on Friday.

As part of the Inner Loop project, a section of Union Street was returned to two-way traffic for the first time in more than 50 years.

It is the section of Union from Monroe Avenue to University Avenue. Union Street has been one-way since the Inner Loop was built in 1964.

This is part of the city’s plan which included filling in a portion of the Inner Loop, as part of efforts to spur economic and residential activity in the city.

Mayor Lovely Warren says the change in Union Street is part of that.

“Having the ability to create jobs in our community through construction and also our businesses being lifted up through that is a good thing. So we’re excited about Union Street going two-way and being able to travel down that, it’s been a long time since Union Street has been two way.”

A small section of Union Street between University Avenue and East Main Street will remain one-way, in the northbound direction until a later phase of the project.

Rochester officials have been considering a few different proposals for development.
