Schumer Says Big Contract Expected To Move Forward For Alstom

Senator Charles Schumer says a project that will bring hundreds of jobs to the Alstom plant in Hornell is moving forward.

The New York Democrat says that the Amtrak Board of Directors is expected to vote this week to support the finalization of negotiations with Alstom to produce high-speed trains for Amtrak's Acela line service.

Schumer says final federal financing approvals have been secured, which clears the way for an agreement that is expected to create about 400 jobs in Hornell and an additional 350 or more across the state.

Congressman Tom Reed, a Republican from Steuben County says the deal will provide a big economic boost for the Southern Tier, and he says it also shows that Alstom has a long term commitment to the region.

"As we go forward, working with the Alstom executives, we've spoken to them numerous times. I know they are committed to this area with that technology and that investment that's going to pay off for generations."

A spokesperson for Alstom tells WXXI News that they are not at liberty right now to comment on what is an ongoing procurement process.

Alstom employs more than 1,000 in Upstate NY.
