RPO Plays Carnegie Hall

Jeff Goldberg-esto

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, singers from the Eastman School of Music Opera Department, and the Eastman-Rochester Chorus perform a concert version of Howard Hanson’s Merry Mount at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday night.

This opera in three acts was written by American composer, conductor and music educator Howard Hanson, who led the Eastman School of Music from 1924-1964.

The appearance is part of the Spring For Music festival. The RPO is one of six orchestras invited to participate.

This will be the RPO’s 17th appearance at Carnegie Hall, but its first at that venue in nearly 30 years. Almost 300 performers went to NYC to take part in the concert.  In addition to the 80-piece RPO and guest conductor Michael Christie, performers include 115 members of the Eastman School of Music’s Eastman-Rochester Chorus. Brenda Tremblay, the host and producer of Classical 91.5 FM WXXI on weekday mornings is one of the singers with that chorus. The Bach’s Children’s Chorus will bring 60 young singers from Rochester.

Another 700 people from Rochester will also be at the May 7th concert which begins at 7:30 p.m.

It will be broadcast live from New York City on Classical 91.5. To listen online, click here to stream the broadcast
