Rochester's Airport To Receive $40 Million In Upstate Competition

A transformation for Rochester’s airport. That’s what Governor Andrew Cuomo talked about today during a stop Wednesday morning at the USA Airports hangar.

Cuomo announced that Rochester is one of two winners of an upstate airport competition for state money.  The Greater Rochester International Airport will get $40 million in funding as part of a $63 million project.  $23 million comes from local sources.

Those dollars will be used to overhaul the aging infrastructure as well as add a number of amenities, including ways to access technology and better food options, and Cuomo says in this global economy, that’s really important.

“The airport, as we said is so important on so many levels, it drives the economy now, it’s the front door to the entire region, and this airport is literally going to be transformed into a state of the art airport.”

The amenities include a redesign of the terminal building, adding retail and dining options, enhanced safety measures and technology engineered by RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, to make travel easier for the hearing impaired.

The project is part of “Finger Lakes Forward,” a blueprint by state economic development officials to generate growth.

The project is expected to be completed within three years and it’s expected to support hundreds of jobs in the area
