Rochester Transit Center Marking its One Year Anniversary

Alex Crichton

Officials from Rochester's bus company say one year after its opening, the RTS Transit Center downtown is a safe facility that serves about a million people each month.

Representatives from RTS, city and county government gathered at the center this morning to mark its first anniversary.

There were several violent incidents between young people after the center opened, but RTS CEO Bill Carpenter says the center is safe, and the plan worked out with the city school district means more students get direct service from home to school and school to home.

"There are a good number of students that still come through here, but it's at a volume that they come through here just like any other public transit customer. It's a safe place, it's a great place and all our customers notice the difference."

Carpenter says the bus company is working with the City School District on a long-term contract.

He notes that nearly 11 million customers a year come through the facility, and he maintains the center is working exactly the way a public transit system should.

Here's Carpenter talking about the Rochester Transit Center becoming a "modern community connection point and transfer hub for customers and visitors to Rochester."
