The garbage plate is so synonymous with Rochester, the city's baseball team decided it was time to change their name to reflect it. Well, for a day anyway.
The Rochester Red Wings will be known as the Rochester Plates, but just for one game, on Thursday, August 10. The team will wear a jersey and cap that pays homage to the Rochester culinary creation.
"There's nothing more Rochester than the garbage plate," Plates (Red Wings) General Manager Dan Mason said in a release. "There isn't another food item that Rochesterians are more proud of or that is more celebrated in our city than the garbage plate and we can't wait to take the field as the plates!"
The on-field caps will feature two cheeseburgers on a bed of home fries and mac salad, topped with the iconic Rochester meat hot sauce, sprinkled with chopped onions and finished off with a mustard 'R' that is served on a home plate.
The jersey is a throwback layered concept that includes home fries, mac salad, cheeseburgers, hot sauce, and onions, with the word 'Plates' drizzled in mustard. The cap and jersey were designed by Brandiose, and is for sale in the team store and online.
The team honors the garbage plate that originated at Nick Tahou's which is a stone's throw away from Frontier Field. All the concession stands will serve up a variation of the garbage plate during the August 10 game.
The Syracuse Chiefs are also changing their name in a one-day stunt. On August 5, against Rochester, the Chiefs will be known as the Syracuse Salt Potatoes.
