Rochester neurosurgeon announces Congressional bid

A Rochester neurosurgeon says he’s seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in the 25th district.

On Saturday, Dr. Jim Maxwell said that, “It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know Congress is broken, but it just might take one to fix it.”

Maxwell, a lifelong Monroe County resident, has served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Rochester General Hospital since 1998. He started in Rochester as a neurosurgeon in 1982.

He says that he is disappointed by the status quo in Congress, “and the empty promises we’ve been given from our elected officials.”

The seat is now held by longtime Democratic Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. She has not formally announced her plans for this upcoming term.

Republican Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini, who has run for the seat twice before, is expected to announce his plans later this month
