Last year, the Monroe County medical examiner investigated 84 accidental deaths from heroin overdoses. Sixty-nine of those deaths occurred in Monroe County, and fifteen other deaths were in the surrounding counties.
That is lower than the 95 heroin-related deaths the medical examiner investigated in 2014, but a significant jump from the 11 deaths reported in 2011.
It's part of a national trend. A surge in heroin-related deaths has been reported in nearly every U.S. county.
