Rochester firefighters perform 2 river rescues in less than an hour

Rochester firefighters had a busy weekend utilizing their rescue skills.

According to officials, on Saturday at about 4:45 p.m., crews were were dispatched for a 22-year-old woman at the bottom of the Genesee River gorge on the west side of the river at Maplewood Park.

Fire personnel hiked over 500 yards down into the gorge to locate the victim and helped the woman across the river via the water rescue boat. She was taken to the hospital. There was no immediate word on her condition.

Shortly after that, just before 5:30 p.m., firefighters got a call about a woman in the river near 120 Main Street.  Firefighters used a “ground ladder” into the river and crews swam out to the woman who was clinging to a bridge abutment under East Main. She was turned over to ambulance personnel, and there was no immediate word on her injuries either.

Officials say the two incidents showed the result of spending a lot of time on training firefighters for these types of rescue operations.
