The latest data from the New York State Labor Department on unemployment rates shows a drop in the number of unemployed people in the Rochester area. The June jobless rate was 4.3 percent, compared to 5.2 percent in June of 2015.
State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says historically, that is a relatively low unemployment rate.
“Before the recession, unemployment averaged around 4.6 for the month of June, and at 4.3 percent, we currently stand well below that long term historical marker.”
Marino says one of the reasons for the drop in unemployment is due to job growth.
Last week the labor department said the Rochester area gained 2,500 private sector jobs over the last year.
But Marino says the drop in the unemployment rate is also likely due to more people dropping out of the workforce, mainly because of changing demographics and people who are retiring.
