RIT Receives $1.5 Million Gift From Wegman Foundation

A new sound stage planned for RIT's future MAGIC Spell Studios is getting a boost from the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation in the form of a $1.5 million gift.

Original plans for the facility called for a 3,400 square foot sound stage inside the studios, but the gift will enable RIT to double the size to 7,000 square feet.

Officials say the larger space expands the types of learning experiences for students and also will help entice independent filmmakers to use the sound stage. With the larger size, it will allow them to apply for tax incentives through the state's film tax credit program.

Governor Cuomo came to RIT in July to announce support for the studios. The state committed $13.5 million to the initiative, with $3 million coming from Dell and $12.4 million from Cisco Systems.
