RIT is continuing its involvement in working to help American manufacturers work more efficiently. The local university is part of a new effort aimed at using advanced robotics in industry.
RIT is a core academic partner in this new consortium, which is led by Carnegie Mellon University and includes more than 220 partners in industry, academia, government and the non-profit sector.
Nabil Nasr is Director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT. He tells WXXI News this latest effort is funded in part by the U.S. Defense Department and its goal is to help a variety of businesses compete in a global environment.
“I think the goal for us is to develop advanced technology that can be competitive, that can be cost saving, that can help our industry be more competitive.” He says the goal, “is to help large companies, small and medium-sized companies and ensure that we have competitive technology in the specific area of that institute.”
RIT has now been named a significant partner in seven initiatives under the umbrella organization called Manufacturing USA which is a network of regional institutes.
Nasr says these institutes play to the university's strengths as they continue to partner with industry on developing new technologies.
