Report: Federal Authorities Looking Into Inmate Abuse At Attica Correctional Facility

File photo

There’s a report that the federal government is now looking into inmate abuse at the Attica Correctional Facility.

The New York Timessays that the federal investigation was revealed in court filings by the three former correctional officers who pleaded guilty in March to state charges stemming from the beating of a 29 year old inmate.

The three prison guards were allowed to avoid jail time in exchange for pleading guilty and agreeing to resign from their jobs.

The three men and a fourth guard who was not prosecuted are still facing a multi-million dollar civil suit by George Williams, the inmate who sustained the injuries.

An attorney for one of the officers referred to a Justice Department investigation into a possible violation of inmate civil rights at Attica, saying that she was told the probe was not limited to the alleged assault on George Williams.

Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen is also quoted as saying the investigation did not appear solely limited to Williams, and may include broader matters as well.

The Times story was reported in collaboration with The Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization that focuses on criminal justice issues.
