Red Light Camera Warning App

The same company that installed red light cameras in Rochester has developed a smart phone app that'll tell drivers where those cameras are located.

CEO for RedFlex Traffic Systems, Jim Saunders, maintains his business has never been about catching people, it's been about changing behaviors.

He says the idea behind traffic light cameras is that when people make a choice, even if it's inattention, there's a consequence.  And paying the consequence, the ticket, actually changes behavior.

Saunders says to help the city's road safety programs, the new app, RedFlex Locator, will tell people where the cameras are.

Saunders says in two-thirds of the cities in which they operate are fixed fee, and they are precluded from participating in the program's revenues.

City Engineer Jim McIntosh says the city gets the difference between the tickets collected and the fee they pay every month for each of the so-called red camera approaches.

He's adds they're pretty excited about the app and the red light camera program, and how they will help with safety efforts in the city.

The current app will show fixed locations across the country.

A second version will have GPS and audio capability.
