Records posted on new website about Attica riot, aftermath

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  A new public website at the New York State Archives contains a collection of documents relating to investigations and litigation that followed the 1971 Attica prison riot.

Most pertain to the case of inmates who sued New York officials and the estate of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, who ordered the prison retaking that left 10 hostages and 29 inmates shot dead by state troopers and prison guards.

The records are from the state attorney general's office, which went to court seeking public disclosure of about 500 pages of long-sealed investigative records, getting 46 pages released last year.

Historian Heather Ann Thompson's recently published book cites official documents showing authorities knew hostages would die and naming troopers and guards who investigators believed fatally shot hostages and many unarmed inmates. None of the shooters were ever charged.
