RCSD Looks at Enrollment & Space Issues

As the city school district’s modernization project kicks off - the Superintendent says declining enrollment means some school buildings not being renovated will need to be closed.

Dr. Bolgen Vargas says the district has more space than students.

He adds too much money is going into energy and maintenance costs rather than more programs and academic supports that could benefit students, “We are losing students and we have rented more space in the last several years and we also are building more charter schools in this community so this means in the new future we're going to continue to lose students."

Vargas says he plans to put together a proposal for School Board members and the community early this fall to address what he calls the district’s “space issues,” and to gather input on the matter.
