Preparing For Traditional Lightbulb Phase-Out

greenbiz.com

As of January 1, the popular 40 and 60-watt incandescent light bulb will start to be phased out around the country.

That's because those bulbs no longer meet new federal guidelines, which require at least 28-percent energy efficiency.

The 40 and 60-watt bulbs no longer meet a new federal energy efficiency law, signed by President George W. Bush in 2007. Stores can finish selling what they have on their shelves, but that's it.

Debby Utter is a department supervisor at Henrietta Home Depot store.

She says CFL, or compact fluorescent lamps, and LED, light emitting diode bulbs will replace the old ones.

"The CFL's and the LED's are actually better money saving bulbs. Prices are coming down quite a bit on the LEDs. The CFL's are comparable to the regular incandescent bulbs."

Utter says a CFL bulb costs a few dollars. LED bulb price tags start around $10 to $20. Utter says they have seen some people coming into the store buying up the old bulbs. That's because it's what people are accustomed to using.
