The new Port of Rochester is expected to open next year.

The site doesn't look like much of a marina yet. It still a huge pit in the ground, surrounded by machines and orange cones, but Mayor Lovely Warren says the project is nearly complete.

"In a few days we will begin to fill the marina with water. The marina will be open for business next year. And we have already began taking reservations for the boater slips."

Warren thanked the city partners and trade unions who helped develop the project, which includes dock space and a boater service facility.

"What we have created here is more than just a marina. We are building a port of opportunity, that will create new jobs and position Rochester as the destination on the Great Lakes."

The project is part of a larger waterfront development project in Charlotte that includes a 10-story building with a hotel, condominiums, a spa and commercial space, which has been criticized by local community groups.

The marina project is estimated to cost $22 million by the city.
