The FBI and police in Gates are offering a $10,000 reward for information that helps them find their suspect who threw a 74-year old woman into the Genesee River on Wednesday.

Police also think he lives in the Exchange Street area of Rochester west to Gates - since he walked to the crime scene.

"Based on his walking patterns, where he walked from, where he came from walking, we believe that he lives in that area," said Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode.

The woman was rescued from the river and her family told Time Warner Cable News she is “physically” okay.

VanBrederode says the carjacking was serious.

"This is actually an attempted murder with an abduction. We've put a lot of resources into this. We have a lot of agencies working together here. It's because of the partnership that we have here in Monroe County that we've made such progress in this case."

Police describe their suspect as a black man between 20 and 30 years old, clean shaven, 5'7"-5'10" tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a black Dickie jacket at the time of the robbery and dark pants. Using surveillance video, police believe they noticed a slight limp with his right foot.

"Clearly when you take a 74-year old victim and push them into the Genesee River, with an embankment of over six feet tall...74 years old. I think the intent was clear, their intent was to kill that person."

VanBrederode hopes someone who knows the suspect will see the video and recognize him.

"If you're a loved one, or you're a family member, you're a friend, I think that you'll recognize whether that's somebody you know or not."

If you recognize the suspect, call 9-1-1 or Crimestoppers (585) 423-9300.
