Ontario County Sheriff: Track Fatal Probe To Last At Least 2 More Weeks

TWC News

Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says it will take a while to complete the investigation into last weekend's fatal accident at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

That was at a dirt track when a 20 year old driver, Kevin Ward Junior of Lewis County, was struck by another race car driven by NASCAR's Tony Stewart.  It happened after Ward got out of his car and was walking along the track to confront Stewart as he drove by.

At a brief news conference on Tuesday, Povero did not give any indication of any criminal charges pending, but did say his staff still needs to work on this for at least another two weeks.

“Investigators continue to seek witnesses, gather evidence and develop the racetrack crash reconstruction. However it would be inappropriate to discuss details or findings of the investigation with the media at this time.”

Povero says when the investigation is completed, his investigators will meet with members of the Ontario County District Attorney's office to talk about all aspects of the investigation.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
