Rochester will be one of the communities to host fuel reserves in Upstate New York in case of any possible emergencies. The designation is being announced on the two-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is announcing a total of six fuel reserves across upstate, that would make gasoline and diesel fuel available to emergency responders in case of a major event, such as a hurricane.
Approximately two and a half million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel will be housed in the strategic fuel reserve. There's no breakdown on how much might be stored in this area. The reserves are being managed by Buckeye Terminals, a Houston based company that already has pipelines and fuel storage in Rochester and across the state.
The idea is that first responders and utilities can count on having the necessary fuel supplies to deal with the aftermath of a major storm or other event.
Last year, a similar fuel reserve was set up on Long Island, in response to the long lines that happened in that region in the days after Superstorm Sandy.
The program is being administered by the state Energy Research and Development Authority with $10 million in funding from the state Power Authority.
