The total  number of students with potential cases of Norovirus at the University of Rochester has risen, but officials are hopeful the recent outbreak has now peaked.

The University Health Service says that there have been a total of 141 cases reported, including 10 at the Eastman School of Music and three at the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Officials do say that the number of new cases being reported by students each day is now in the single digits.

The university says it expects the sanitization efforts using a special Norovirus-cleaning cleanser will continue throughout this week. Hydrogen peroxide wipes are also being distributed around campus.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. Symptoms last 1 to 3 days, and most people recover without treatment.

In an earlier email to the university community, officials said that there has been a lot of work done to try and identify the source of the illness and they say there is absolutely no indication that it started with food or any of the dining facilities.
