Doctor Kennedy says county officials are in constant communication with the State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.

Monroe County’s Public Health director says there is no cause for alarm locally over reports of a severe respiratory illness that has infected hundreds of children in Illinois and Missouri.

According to Doctor Byron Kennedy, New York has no confirmed cases of Enterovirus-68, so far.

"We have no known cases in this community and so folks who are concerned the recommendation from the CDC is you really have to be concerned if you've been in specific areas that are endemic. And then if you are, the CDC guidance is to monitor your symptoms for about 20 to 30 days, 21 days specifically," said Kennedy.

The doctor explained county officials are in constant communication with the State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.

The most effective prevention for the virus is good hygiene, including regular hand washing.
