New York Designated "Wine Region Of The Year"

New York State is getting a special  designation from a major wine magazine. It has been honored with the title "Wine Region of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast magazine.  The publication cites the quality of wines and the growth of the industry. Governor Cuomo says the state has worked hard in recent years to partner with the industry to help winemakers produce and promote their products.

Jim Trezise is the President of the New York Wine and Grape Foundation. He says this designation by one of the top wine magazines is an important designation for the state.

"The fact that we were chosen over four incredible wine regions, I mean, Champagne, France; Chianti, Italy; Sonoma, California and Red Mountain, Washington, that's a big deal, that really says that New York is now recognized as a world class wine region."

Trezise says the designation is partly the result of a concerted effort in recent years to expand and improve New York’s wine offerings.

"That’s a result of a combination of research that we fund at Cornell University, quality focused research and also the collaboration among winemakers to figure out how everybody can make the best possible wines that we can."

Trezise says the designation by Wine Enthusiast magazine will help New  York better market its wines.

New York is the third largest wine and grape producing state in the country.
