NYSP

State Police who patrol eight counties in western New York have a new leader.

The New York State Police promoted Maj. Steven A. Nigrelli to command the unit based in Batavia.

Nigrelli is a 25-year veteran of the NYSP. He has served as a uniform Trooper in central New York, a member of the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET), then as an undercover officer.

Nigrelli was promoted to Sergeant and Investigator in 1999, and was assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for Troop "A" headquartered in Batavia.

He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2003, supervising the BCI unit. In 2007 he became Captain, and took command of the patrol zone in Jamestown. The next year he relocated to the zone based in Clarence, overseeing all uniform operations in the zone.

In 2012, Nigrelli was promoted to BCI Captain for Troop A in Batavia.

Among the high profile cases Nigrelli worked are numerous homicides, the manhunt for Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, and he was scene commander for the investigation of the crash of Continental Flight #3407 near Buffalo.

As the Troop “A” Commander, Nigrelli will oversee the State Police operations in the eight counties of Western New York. Under his command will be over 400 civilian and sworn personnel.

According to information released by the State Police, Major Nigrelli has been committed to community service and volunteerism, dedicating his time and energy volunteering for Special Olympics. He is the New York State Torch Run Director and International Executive Council Board of Director for Special Olympics.

Prior to joining the State Police, Major Nigrelli briefly served as member of the Buffalo Housing Police and earned a Bachelors Degree from Buffalo State College.
