New "No Discharge" Zones Proposed

DEC Logo

The state Department of Environmental Conservation wants to make Seneca and Cayuga Lakes No Discharge Zones.

That would make it illegal to discharge sewage from boats. Boaters would pump out at marinas.

The designation to add Seneca and Cayuga to a group that includes the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario is because of their connection to the state canal system.

This week, the D-E-C also added seven lakes to its list of those with problem blue-green algae blooms.

Testing confirmed a small, localized growth on Conesus Lake and new algae was spotted on Honeoye Lake.

Java and Silver Lakes in Wyoming County, and Mill Pond in Genesee are also on the algae list.

The pea-green algae can make you sick if you get into it.
