The latest numbers from the NYS Labor Department show continued growth in the Rochester area job market.  The region saw a gain of 7100 private sector jobs in May compared to this time last year.

State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says that one encouraging sign is that more sectors of the local economy are starting to see gains, as well as the usual growth areas.

"Private education and health care continue to account for a large share of that hiring, however, we're also beginning to see a number of other key sectors, including construction, retail and recreation all reporting moderate hiring as well.”

But Marino says that while some manufacturing companies have seen gains, overall that sector continues to be a weak spot.

"We're also beginning to see a number of manufacturing employers beginning to expand, however at the same time…although we're seeing a little moderation, the number is still moving in a downward direction."

Marino says since the end of the recession several years ago, the Rochester area has regained all of the jobs lost during the recession, and we've seen a gain of another 11,000 since then.

The May statewide unemployment rate was 5.7 percent down from 6.4 percent a year ago. The Rochester area unemployment rate will be released next week.
