Low Primary Election Turnout Expected

Voter turnout is typically light for primary elections, and officials from the Monroe County Board of Elections say they're expecting more of the same today.

Commissioners Peter Quinn and Tom Ferrarese say they expect turnout to be in the range of 17 percent for registered Democrats, 14 percent for Republicans and 5 percent for voters registered with the Working Families Party.

Democratic commissioner Ferrarese says primaries have traditionally had low turnout, even when there's been an important race, such as today's gubernatorial primary.

Republican elections Commissioner Peter Quinn says races on the GOP ballot include primaries in the 135th State Assembly District, and the 62nd State Senate District.

Both stress the importance of voting today.

Ferrarese says people are picking their leadership and it's very important people get out and vote for like-minded individuals so government is functioning the way they want it to.

Quinn says primaries are just as important -- even more so than the general election -- because voters are picking the candidate for their party that will be on the November ballot.

The polls are open until 9 tonight.  For information on eligibility to vote and polling sites, visit the county's website.

WXXI will have coverage of the results, and analysis right after the polls close on AM-1370, FM 91.5 HD-2 and online at wxxinews.org
