Local Swimmers Raise Funds for Victims of Violence

orangectlive.com

Today is "Orange Day", a day dedicated by the United Nations to ending violence against girls and women.

Locally, an event called "Swimmin for Women" will help raise funds for programs that educate people about how to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault.

Organizer Annie Lane, a survivor of domestic abuse, says the College at Brockport women's swim team will be swimming today in memory of former teammate Alexandra Kogut, who was murdered in her dorm room in 2012 by her boyfriend.  Lane says swimmers will be raising funds all around the world today for victims they know and love.

"We founded Swimmin' for Women as an event or an activity to get people swimming around the world in solidarity. My original partners are in Italy, and they came up with the concept."

Lane says anyone can take part in today's event. All you have to do is commit to a swim of any length or time in any location, and ask people to donate to the cause.

The Webster Aquatic Center is waiving fees for those who participate in the fundraiser.
