(WXXI News & AP) Nearly a dozen Red Cross volunteers from the Finger Lakes and Western New York regions are headed to help with flooding down south.

The Red Cross says 11 volunteers from its Western and Central New York Region will deploy to South Carolina to aid with tasks like staffing shelters and helping assess the disaster.

Nearly 90 Red Cross workers are already there helping residents deal with the floods. The flooding prompted hundreds of weekend rescues and threatened the drinking water supply for hundreds of thousands of people in Columbia, South Carolina, with officials warning that some people could be without potable water for days because of water main breaks.    There also are power outages affecting thousands.

Among the local Red Cross volunteers headed to the region, Sarah Perkins and Greg Langen of Pittsford, Nancy Moore of Clifton Springs, Robert Barton of Savannah, Daniel Boyce of Wellsville and Stu Moore of Allegany.
