Several local colleges and universities will benefit from grants announced Monday by Governor Cuomo.

The more than $35 million is from the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program which provides matching grants to private colleges and universities.

The largest local grant, of $2.5 million is going to the University of Rochester to help with renovations to the Frederick Douglass Building. Officials say the money will help modernize the last of its River Campus student dining centers. That building will also be home to the recently established Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center and a new language center.

Other grants include money for renovations at RIT’s Institute Hall, Nazareth College’s Smyth Hall, and equipment for the Integrated Science and Health Sciences Building at St. John Fisher College.
