Two local sculptors are being honored by The Smithsonian Craft Show as the recipients of that organization’s first-ever Visionary Award. Wendell Castle and Albert Paley will receive the award at a dinner in Washington, D.C. on April 9th, and they will also give a talk there on April 10th.
The award is part of the Smithsonian Craft Show which takes place in April at the National Building Museum.
The Visionary Award celebrates artist who have risen to the pinnacle of sculptural arts and design. Castle is described as the ‘father of the modern design art furniture movement’ and Paley is a metal sculptor whose works include the recent ‘Paley on Park Avenue,’ an art project which involved the placement of 13 sculptures along the median on Park Avenue in Manhattan.
That project was also the subject of a documentary produced by WXXI-TV.
Castle and Paley are represented in the permanent collections of more than 100 museums worldwide. Both of them have work on display at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester and at a number of other venues around the area.
