Large, smoky fire at scrap metal recycling plant in Chili

Spectrum News

Dozens of firefighters were called out to a large, smoky fire at a scrap metal plant on Scottsville Road on Friday afternoon. It was at the Metalico plant in Chili.

The fire broke out just before 1:00 p.m., not far from the Rochester Airport, but the heavy smoke did not affect any flights.

There were no injuries.  A Gates fire official, Joseph Manuse, told Spectrum News they do train specifically for this type of incident.

“We actually work with Metalico, we do some training with them, regularly, annually, so we do train on this type of event and we work with the employees very closely.”

The fire was being brought under control in the late afternoon,  but firefighters were expected to remain on scene for several hours.

There were no evacuations, but residents nearby were advised to close their windows. There was no word yet on a cause for the fire.
