Local leaders and residents celebrated the opening of Landmark at Sibley Square, 72 affordable apartments for seniors 55 years of age or older in the historic downtown building.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said in its prime, the building was a point of pride for the city, and reflected on its legacy.

"I know as a little girl coming here this was the building we used to, you put your fancy dress on, Mom would have a pair of gloves on for high tea. This is where you really felt like a grown up I loved coming to this building."

The units are split between two floors, with elevators that go straight to this section.

Residents began moving into their homes in January.

Hochul also said it’s important to give seniors options to stay downtown.

"This makes people feel alive, especially when they can interact with millennials. This is what I always do, I moved downtown. I wanted to hang out with people half my age to make me feel not quite so old so it’s important, it’s important for people my age to feel this."

Mayor Lovely Warren says she was thankful for everyone involved in the project working to make Rochester a place everyone would want to call home.

She said it was a priority for her that Sibley be a place that’s inviting to all Rochesterians.

"That no matter your income, no matter where you’re from, that you be a part of the rebirth of downtown Rochester."

To date, the project has created nearly 1,400 construction jobs and 31% of all new hires were Monroe County residents.

The building also offers 104 market rate apartments, referred to as Spectra at the Sibley.

Renovations began on the one million square foot revitalization in 2013.
