Kodak To Stop Making Acetate Base For Film

We are learning more about some of the upcoming layoffs at Kodak.  They are related to another change involving film manufacturing.

The company recently filed a notice with the state saying that the employees would be laid off by the end of August.

A Kodak spokesman tells WXXI News that most of those layoffs are related to the company's decision to stop the manufacturing of the acetate base that is used in film.

Kodak still has some of the acetate on hand, and when that runs out it will purchase the material from other manufacturers.  The demand for film has dropped sharply with the advent of digital photography, although a number of  movies are still shot on film, and many of those are produced on Kodak film.

Kodak has laid off  a number employees in recent years as it has transitioned to a company which will eventually focus on commercial printing and packaging. Kodak is expected to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy this summer
